Ahh, summer! It means relaxed routines, more lenient bedtimes and no homework! One thing you don’t need is a new struggle. I am all for some good old screen enjoyment, it is summer after all, but everything in moderation, right?!

Here are my tips to make your kids’ connectivity a positive experience instead of another thing you have to worry about. Most importantly, it’s doing what feels right for your family. Nothing will work for everyone. Feel free to try new things and adjust as their ages, needs and activities change.
First, let everyone know that screen time will be managed. Just put it out there for everyone to discuss. Some options that might work for your family are two hours per day, evenings or weekends only. (I can’t imagine the last one, but I know a family that is perfectly happy doing it.)
Have you ever thought about screen-free zones in your home? Some friends of ours only allow screens (phones, tablets and TVs) to be viewed in the family room. Everywhere else in their home is screen free.
The easiest way of all would just be hooking yourself up with Xfinity xFi. The service has so many advantages that you’re going to wonder why you didn’t have this sooner! You can see what devices are online, how long they’ve been on, and even pause WiFi for devices on your network from anywhere and on any device – even from your TV with Xfinity X1. Additionally, keep your kids safer as they surf the Web by setting safe browsing modes for kid-appropriate content with Parental Controls. Best of all, there are features like Bedtime Mode to make sure everyone is getting a good night’s sleep, even the teens!
Every time I’ve talked to another mom about xFi, they’re like how do I get this?? If you’ve ever chatted with a group of moms, you know how much the internet and kids come up! Getting set up is super simple.
Of course, you have to have Xfinity Internet service to enable xFi, then you rent the xFi Wireless Gateway (it’s a router and modem all in one). Lastly, just follow these easy steps:
-
- Start by downloading the Xfinity xFi app
- Snap a pic of your Gateway’s QR code (hint: it’s on the bottom)
- Personalize your WiFi name and password
Finally, just sit back and enjoy a sweet glass of ice cold lemonade while you enjoy the peace of mind and convenience Xfinity xFi brings to your home network. Yep, you’re now the cool mom.
