Renewable energy is awesome

You care about the Earth, right?! You recycle, use public transportation or carpool and conserve water but have you ever considered renewable energy? If you’re like me, you want your kids to learn about caring for the environment too. My teens were very interested in all the wind farms we passed on a recent road trip. After being introduced to Xcel Energy, I felt like this was the perfect time to discuss some of the options and the importance of knowing more about the energy we use.

We’ve discussed turning off lights when you leave a room, taking clothes out of the dryer immediately instead of fluffing numerous times and unplugging electronics when they are done charging. One thing that was new was discussing opting to choose renewable energy sources to power a home. I’m so proud at how much they are  still chatting about these things. It definitely got them thinking.

You can start a discussion just like we did with your family too! Its a great way to be mindful of our energy use and there’s lots of other benefits too!!

Xcel Energy’s Windsource® program is an excellent way to be more environmentally conscious and power your home more economically too!  As the nation’s No. 1 wind power provider for the past decade, Xcel Energy knows that wind energy is more than an environmental choice. Wind can help to keep energy rates affordable by protecting you against rising fuel and other costs.

First, I discussed a few terms with my teens to see how much they understood.

What is wind power?

From Miriam-Webster: Use of the energy in winds to produce power. Though wind is irregular and spread out, it contains tremendous amounts of energy. Sophisticated wind turbines have been developed to convert this energy to electric power. The use of wind-energy systems grew considerably in the 1980s and ’90s.

What is renewable energy?

Renewable energy is energy that comes from sources that are naturally replenished. Renewable energy replaces conventional fuels and uses wind and other sources to provide electricity and other energy services.

What is Windsource®?

Windsource® enables Xcel Energy’s electric customers to purchase renewable energy, generated above and beyond the renewable energy in the standard energy supply. The program offers you a choice on how you want to use energy. When you sign up for Windsource®, you pay a small premium in return for the environmental attributes of the renewable energy, giving you the right to make the claim that you are powered by renewable energy.

Benefits:

  • Be a part of a growing community of environmentally-sensitive people.
  • It’s an easy, inexpensive way to support renewable energy.
  • Benefit from a cleaner environment.
  • Be prepared for the future.
  • and so much more!

Have this discussion with your teens today! Involve them in making environmentally-conscious decisions! You might just be surprised at how interested they really are!

How to enroll: Residential electric customers can call Xcel Energy at 1-800-895-4999 or visit ResponsibleByNature.com/Windsource to enroll. Windsource currently operates in five of Xcel Energy’s eight states:  Colorado, Minnesota, New Mexico, Wisconsin and Michigan.
